Your Salad – Healthy or Unhealthy?

TGIF! Your Friday Food For Thought:

You’re making your salad unhealthy.

Most people think, “I should eat a salad” when they consider having a “healthy” meal. But here’s the thing, salads aren’t always that healthy.

The one thing that makes them most unhealthy is the dressing you choose to put on it. Lots of salad dressings have added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil and other not so good things. So, how do you make your salad dressing more healthy or “clean”?

Combine a healthy fat (avocado, olive oil, sesame seed oil, etc) with an acid (fresh squeeze lime, lemon, orange or apple cider vinegar) and voila! You can even add some herbs for more flavor like garlic, rosemary, sage, and basil. Try combining several ingredients together to arrive at a fun combination. That’s basically what hummus or guacamole is, and I love using those as my dressings.

Your Healthy Challenge this week: Make your own salad dressings, experiment and have fun doing it! If you eat a salad at a restaurant, inquire about what’s in it and perhaps ask for olive oil and a lemon slice instead.

Bonus side note: Always choose dark leafy greens over iceberg lettuce. DLG have way more nutrients in them which makes them more healthy.

Happy Eating!
